Graduation Requirements

  • Basic requirements – “WMU Essential Studies”
    • Level 1 – Foundations – 4 courses, one from each subcategory
    • Level 2 – Exploration and Discovery – 6 courses, one from each subcategory
    • Level 3 – Connections – 2 courses, one from each subcategory
      • Level 2 and 3 course selections must include one “Diversity and Inclusion” and one “Planetary Sustainability” course
    • 2024-25 WMU Essential Studies course list
  • Plus the requirements of the College selected as the major
  • Declaring a major at WMU is done by applying to the college of your choice within the university, for example the College of Engineering.
    • Each college will have it’s own requirements for acceptance, including pre-requisite coursework. This is intended to ensure that applicants will be able to successfully complete the rest of the work required.
    • This page describes the whole process for the College of Engineering. It lists the “Pre-Engineering Curriculum” courses that must be completed before applying to the College.
    • So CJ doesn’t need to worry about declaring a major or applying to the College of Engineering during first year. He will need to take several semesters of prerequisite classes during first year in order to make himself eligible to apply.
  • Course descriptions catalog lookup
  • Full load = 15-17 credit hours per semester (~5 classes) – see sample schedules in the engineering program links above
  • ~127 credits or 32 courses required to graduate, see each College’s degree requirements

Room & Board

  • Double rooms are the default. Singles are available but upperclass students have priority
  • There are three meal plans. The two most likely look like:
    • “Bronco 14” – 14 meals a week = $11,681 annual room and board
      • Extra “Dining Dollars” can be purchased online at any time and added to student’s Bronco Card account for use in WMU cafe’s, retail outlets in Student Union, and dining halls
    • “Bronco Gold” – unlimited meals, $50 in Dining Dollars, 4 guest meals = $12,174 annual room and board
